  The
pictures to the left, are respectively from left to
right, of Al Dorfman and Lloyd Metzler. They come to mind
together because so often their children, Abby and Julie Dorfman, and
Margy (and sometimes Ricky) Metzler and I played together. We
almost always played indoors. We spent time reading books,
playing board games (Candyland and Chutes and Ladders), and
coloring. Often, Edie Metzler made lunch for us. I always
enjoyed that very much as I did playing in their home. About the
time Lloyd became seriously ill, they moved to a house in the
suburbs. I was sorry to see them go but did occasionally get to
visit them in their new home where I learned the joys of running in a
sprinkler on a hot summer day followed by playing solitaire (with
cards) under a nearby tree.
Other brief memories of
various families:
- Clark family: I played mainly with Betty Clark who
was my age. Betty was an extraordinary person--bright, beautiful,
charming--everyone always loved Betty. Her older sister, Judy,
was quiet and I did not see too much of her. Betty's father was a
doctor and it appeared that the whole family led an orchestrated
life. I remember several times being a guest in Betty's
home. She taught me to make carnations from Kleenex and a bobby
pin. I really enjoyed that. Betty was very good at art and
at coloring and was always generous in sharing her thoughts and kind
comments. Betty and I remained friends from early days throughout
high school. Her mother, Eleanor, was always there when we played
and was very kind to us. Betty's father, Dwight, was not often
there but when he was he seemed quick to action and a kind
person. I remember that in later years Betty and I took swimming
lessons together (with others) and I sprained a finger. She
brought me to her home and her father fixed it up.
- Cramer family: I played mainly with Browning Cramer
who was a year younger than I was, and some with his older brother
Owen. We did some trading of stamps but more often we played
cards and sometimes played cowboys and indians. I had lots of fun
with them. We played mainly indoors; I recall that often there
was beautiful music playing softly in the background.
- Chern family: I played with Paul outdoors only.
Paul was quite a bit ahead of me in school. He loved baseball and
was really good at it. I learned a great deal about fielding and
hitting from him. Sometimes, when we couldn't even get a game of
"bounce-or-fly" together, Paul would play with us little kids at "hide
and seek" or similar game that did not have requirements for numbers of
people to play. Sometimes, we would also just sit around and talk
about almost anything, but usually an abstract conversation of some
sort, about shapes or about imagining what another planet might look
like, and so forth.
