Context:

Cultural, cont'd

In 1967, a neighborhood defined by eclectic revival architectural styles and a common cultural history was facing the mounting pressures of university growth, increased traffic congestion, the loss of character through residential development and the development of Kerrytown. These pressures prompted the founding of the Old West Side Association for the neighborhood. This neighborhood association facilitated the designation of the historic district called the "Old West Side," formerly called "old German Town" (Wilson, p. 6). A portion of the project site contains this historic district.

The dark polygons in the image to the left represent those buildings within the historic district that were identified as significant to the character of the neighborhood. Through a long process of historic nomination forms, information about these structures helped designate the neighborhood as a historic district.
