MEMORIES
  • In earlier years, I recall enjoying having stories read to me.  Sometime in my fourth year, I must have gotten the knack of reading for myself.  From that point on, my memory of events is pretty continuous (previously, discrete events only).
  • I really enjoyed the Winnie the Pooh stories.  Eeyore was a favorite.
  • I remember my friend Brucie; my friend Ann Swearingen and her parents and brother, as well as their unusual home with high ceilings and church-like windows.
  • I remember my parents' friends the Lowmans:  A. Marshall and Camilla.  "Grandpa" Lowman was lots of fun--I remember rolling on the living room floor with him and throwing popcorn up in the air and catching it.  I remember the Lowman home; it was red and there was a double-tiered back yard with a croquet course on one level.
  • Tales from the Vienna Woods , Roses from the South, and the Blue Danube (all Johann Strauss) were favorite pieces of music, as was (Mozart) Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.  Also enjoyed Peter and the Wolf (Tschaikovsky) but not as much as the others.
  • I think that Grandpa Lowman really liked Roses from the South.  As I understand it, he was President of Taylor Wines and he also owned a company that grew roses for florists in upstate New York.  He used to bring us amazing roses!  I remember one kind that had light green flowers.
  • Botsie was still my babysitter and sometimes she brought along others, as well.  I think "Lynn" might have been one.  Some one of Botsie's friends scared me...she had a big, beautiful smile with big teeth that reminded me of the Wolf in LIttle Red Riding Hood.
  • I enjoyed sitting in the kitchen watching my mother as she made fantastic platters of appetizers in her catering business.  The apple and pear made from hard boiled eggs were especially intriguing to me, as were the checkerboard sandwiches.
