   Juella D. Steenstra

   1917-2009

Juella D. (Kleinheksel) Steenstra, age 91, entered her heavenly home January 17, 2009.  Juella was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother.  She enjoyed baking and cooking, and prepared and served delicious meals with beautiful presentation.  She was a gifted seamstress and lovingly sewed a special quilt for each of her 23 grandchildren, as well as hundreds of home stitched gifts given each Christmas to all her family.  Juella was born in 1917 in Arlene, Michigan to George and Minnie Kleinheksel.  She was doted on and loved as the only daughter, and lived many happy memories in her parents' home.  She married John Steenstra and moved to Grand Rapids where they began the Steenstra Cookie Company, producing the famous Dutch windmill cookies from the Steenstra recipe originating in Friesland, Netherlands.  She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and her brother, John.  Our "Cookie Grandma" will be dearly missed and her memories cherished by her 7 children, Hazel Dunn of Kentwood, Herm (Ethel) Steenstra of Jenison, Marilyn (Bob) Ebels of Holland, Petie (John) Vonk of Greeley, CO, Rog (Jan) Steenstra of Jenison, Dave (Linda) Steenstra of Canadian Lakes, Judy (Norm) Schalk of Grand Rapids; 23 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Jane Steenstra, Jo Steenstra; several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday 11:00 a.m. at Bethany United Reformed Church, 5401 Byron Center SW, Wyoming, with Rev. Arthur Besteman and Rev. Casey Freswick officiating.  Interment is at Chapel Hill Cemetery.  Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association or Faith Hospice.
