Robert M. O'Brien,
aged 83, of Walker, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, December 19,
2009,
after a long battle with cancer. He was born to the proud parents of
Charles
Virgil and Julia Mary Carolyn O'Brien in Mitchell, South Dakota. Robert
served
in the US Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater where he was
a staff
sergeant in the medical field and also served as an M.P. He was a chief
inspector at Kelvinator in the porcelain plant and a self-employed
General
Contractor. Robert also worked for the secret service in Washington,
D.C. In
the 70's, he owned a night club called Canopy Lounge for 16 years prior
to his
retirement. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert P. O'Brien; his
beloved
wife of 58 years, Lee Virginia O'Brien; sister, Opal G. VandenBos and
her
husband, Burt; and his parents. Robert leaves behind his brother,
Victor
O'Brien; sisters-in-law, Virginia Zowoski and Josephine Stratton; his
very best
friend of 60 years and caregiver of five months, Marie R. Hopkins; best
friends, Al Spoors, Robert (Judy) Kelley, and Gary Holton. The family
would
like to express a special thanks to the staff of Great Lakes Hospice,
Jan Jones
of Guardian Angels, Dr. Gleffe D.O., and his nurse, Sue. Also to Chris
Corilla
and Dylan of Bennigan's on Alpine and Bill Strong of Starbucks on
Alpine.
Funeral services for Robert will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the
chapel
at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, 2894 Patterson Ave SE, Grand Rapids
with
military honors by the Kent County Veterans Honor Guard. Relatives and
friends
may meet the family at the chapel on Monday beginning at 10 a.m. until
the time
of the service.
