Maxine Cherry Martin (nee Markel), 86, entered into her eternal home April 11, 2009 in Clare, MI. Maxine was born on July 27, 1922 in Grand Rapids, MI. Daughter of Warren and Clara (Cherry) Markel. She was married for fifty eight years to Rev. C. William Martin, and served eight churches with him in western Michigan. They retired in 1989 to Shelby, MI. Maxine was a great worker for the Lord, serving in many positions in United Methodist Women organization, teaching Sunday School and in the camping programs of the church. Since coming to Shelby she also mentored students in the elementary school and was known for the many birthday cards sent to those on Life Line and her holiday treats. Maxine was loved, her smile and laughter will be missed by her husband, C. William; children, Dr. David and Colleen Bremer of Clare, MI, Kim and Claudia Volheim of Granger, IN and Charles and Beth Martin of Midland, MI; grandchildren, Zachary and Lynn Clement-Bremer, Kara Bremer, Nathan and Benjamin Volheim and Hannah and Evan Martin; sisters-in-law, Harriet Markel of El Paso, TX, Charlene Martin and Marcia Snoek of Grand Rapids. Maxine is also remembered with much love by her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin and Raymond and a sister, Jennie Bloomer. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 16th at St. Paul's United Methodist Church where the family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. before the service. Interment is at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Maxine's name to the Shelby United Methodist Church or to the United Methodist Community House in Grand Rapids.
